Problems setting up GMX in my email program

Are you trying to set up your GMX account in a third-party email program and it’s not working? Here are some troubleshooting suggestions.

You have tried to set up your GMX account in the email program on your computer, but the setup doesn’t work and you receive an error message. This may be due to the following reasons:

POP3/IMAP is turned off

By default, retrieval of emails using POP3 or IMAP is switched off in your GMX mailbox. If you want to send or receive your emails with a third-party email program, please activate POP3 & IMAP in your email settings.

Error message in your mailbox

Some error messages, e.g. temporary blocks, may not be displayed correctly in your third-party email application. Log in to GMX directly on a computer (PC or Mac) and check whether you are shown an error message after logging in. This will then contain further instructions on how to fix the problem.

Server data incorrect

You have entered the wrong server data.

Check the server data

Inbox (IMAP) Inbox (POP3) Outbox (SMTP)
Server imap.gmx.com pop.gmx.com mail.gmx.com
Port 993 995 587
Encryption SSL or encryption SSL or encryption STARTTLS, TLS or encryption

If STARTTLS is not available in the program, please use the TLS protocol. If no option exists for this either, it is sufficient to activate the “Encryption” option. Alternatively, you can use port 465 with SSL encryption for the outgoing mail server.

Please note:

You can only use a TLS protocol if your email program uses TLS versions 1.2 or 1.3. For security reasons, we no longer support the older TLS versions 1.0 and 1.1.

Incorrect settings

When you set up an email account manually, you input settings such as whether the outgoing mail server requires authentication. If the email program sets up the account automatically, certain settings are set by default. The settings may be incorrect.

Check the settings

Read the instructions for setting up your email program in the GMX Help Center. Check that your settings match those in the instructions. If the account has been set up automatically, delete the account and set it up manually instead.
Info:

Some older email programs support the outdated “SMTP-after-POP” sending method. This method does not require password authentication when sending email, which leads to an increased security risk. SMTP-after-POP does not meet the high security standards of GMX and is therefore no longer supported.

GMX login data incorrect

You have entered the wrong email address and/or password.

Check email address and password.

Verify your login information by trying to log in to your email account on the gmx.com webpage. If you have forgotten your password, you can reset it. You will find more information on how to do this on the GMX password recovery help page.

Conflict with security software

You have security software installed on your computer, such as a virus scanner or firewall, that prevents you from receiving or sending email.

Check the security software

Check the settings of your security software. If necessary, contact the manufacturer of the software.

Outdated email program

You are using an outdated email program that does not meet current security requirements.

Change your email program

Switch to an up-to-date email program. For example, Mozilla Thunderbird is a free and reputable email program.
